Adult cataract

Cataract is a very common eye condition.
The primary cause of the disease is age-related changes in the lens. Its transparency directly affects the sharpness of vision. The world appears blurred to the patient, as if viewed through clouded glass. In some cases, altered colour perception is also observed.

Cataract is an age-related condition associated with "wear" of the crystalline lens — the loss of its transparency, clarity, and elasticity. The earlier a cloudy lens is replaced with a clear artificial one (IOL), the less time will be needed for vision to recover.

How cataract presents

It is important to remember: the early stage of cataract is almost entirely asymptomatic. As the condition advances, the clinical picture worsens.

    First signs:

  • Deterioration of visual acuity
  • Mild haziness or dark spots before the eyes
  • Blurring and loss of definition in contours

    Additional symptoms:

  • Increasingly poor object perception
  • External signs: change in the colour of the pupil (the pupil becomes white)

Causes of cataract development

In addition to age-related changes, cataract development may be triggered by the following factors:

  • Previous eye surgery or eye trauma
  • Prolonged use of certain medications (corticosteroids, tetracyclines, some antidepressants)
  • Eye burns: ultraviolet or light radiation (e.g. during welding work without eye protection) causes damage to the lens

Treatment of cataract

Cataract can only be treated surgically.
The modern method for treating cataract is phacoemulsification: replacement of the cloudy lens with a clear intraocular lens (IOL) using ultrasound. The parameters and model of the lens are selected individually for each patient.
