Congenital strabismus
Strabismus in newborns can be identified after 6–7 months of age.
Before this point, the infant's eyes may deviate, and this is not considered pathological. The reason is that the visual pathways, visual perception, and fixation ability have not yet fully developed at this stage.
After 6 months, any ocular deviation is a reason to visit a paediatric ophthalmologist, as the eyes should by this point have learned to fix and look straight ahead — and the examination is also necessary to identify the cause of the deviation.
The paediatric ophthalmologist must not only check the position of the eyes but also carry out a detailed examination, including fundus assessment. Surgical treatment of strabismus in newborns is necessary in cases of congenital strabismus, as correct eye alignment will lead to clearer visual perception and the development of binocular vision. Surgery can be performed from as early as 8–9 months of age when high-precision, minimally traumatic surgical techniques are employed.
